There are 31 Colorado Game Development companies according to the International Game Developers Association. These companies are mostly located in the Boulder-Denver-Colorado Springs areas.

Colorado colleges are rapidly including game development courses in their curricula and many are considering a major or minor in the field if demand continues. The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs saw the game development major double from 2007. Westwood College now has 200 students in game art or game programming. Most of the schools design programs to teach fundamental skills that are useful in a number of fields, rather than focusing on what is hot right now.

Game Designers
The lead designer leads his team of designers, narrators, artists and psychologists to develop a game from concept to the production of a robust game. Game designers’ salaries start at $35,000. Some designers make $200,000 per year. A bachelor’s degree is necessary.

Video Game Programmers
There is always room for video game programmers and the most complicated role-playing games may demand 15 different types of programming. A bachelor’s degree is required along with familiarity with C or C++, Assembly, Perl and Lua languages. Salaries average $77,000 for new programmers to more than $125,000 for the very experienced.

Video Game Narrators
Narrators are the game’s writers. They create the game’s language, person and place names, instructions and more. A stong writing background plus a familiarity with storyboarding and graphics is usually necessary. Average salary in the U.S. is $65,000 per year.

Video Game Artists and Animators
The artists and animators of the game produce all artwork and motion animation. From pencil to 3D software, the artist must be imaginative and skilled in all phases of classic and digital art. Entry-level salaries average $65,000 per year.

Many game companies are experimenting with hiring psychologists to scientifically test their games and the effects they have on the users. Is the player excited or having an anxiety attack? A PhD psychologist will make between $70,000 and $80,000 to start.
