In the 2010 U.S. Census, Alaska ranked dead last in the nation when it came to population density with a little bit more than 1.2 inhabitants per square mile. Plainly speaking, Alaska covers a lot of land, but doesn’t have enough people with which to cover it. The state has just seven Title IV degree-granting institutions compared the national average of 90, and just one institution – the University of Alaska Anchorage – is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. This may seem like limited options, but it’s also an opportunity for online art schools to make a difference. Given the spread out nature of the state’s population and the need for a diverse range of higher education options, online art schools could be just what the state needs.

Some of the nation’s biggest online art education providers recognized this opportunity and big names like DeVry University, American InterContinental University, and the International Academy of Design and Technology all provide distance learning opportunities for Alaskan students in subjects like graphic design, photography, and website development. Alaska has state institutions with online art education opportunities as well.

While you can’t earn a full online degree, the University of Alaska Southeast offers multiple online art and art history courses and the same goes for the University of Alaska Anchorage, which offers online design and art history courses. If you are looking for an online art degree than your best bet is the University of Alaska Fairbanks, which offers online master’s degrees in cultural studies and online innovative design.

Online Education in Alaska Overview

While the options for online art schools in Alaska may not be as plentiful as they are in other states, the good news is that the Alaskan government and its policymakers recognize an opportunity for online education make a difference in the state. The national campaign, Digital Learning Now, commended the state for its early adoption of online and blended learning methods and for its effective, state-run, virtual learning network.

There is still a lot of work that needs to be done however. Digital Learning Now gave Alaska high scores for its commitment to personalizing learning and its lack of barriers to student access. But it also noted Alaska’s severe lack of infrastructure and accountability that will take online learning in the state to the next level.

Why take online art classes in Alaska?

One of the inherent benefits of online art school is that you become immediately familiar with important online design and photography software that you will need to be skilled in when it comes time to find a job. These tools aid your online art education, but they will also prove incredibly useful in your working life, and it is always nice to be comfortable with them early.

But most important, and we have already mentioned it a lot but it bears repeating, online art schools are typically most beneficial to students who either feel more comfortable with an asynchronous class schedule and self-paced learning style, or people without the means, especially when it comes to transportation, to make the most of an opportunity. Online art degrees, whether they are from a big name in online education or a state university offering degrees, provide that flexible option for those who otherwise couldn’t make it work.
