Buildings have been a part of our society for many, many moons. They are perhaps one of the most functional types of art in the world. It’s amazing to think back and realize that humans started out dwelling in caves and mud huts, especially when we take a look at some of the massive skyscrapers and other structures that are now built every day.

Of course, as many people may already realize, it takes a great degree of talent and special knowledge to design these buildings. Careers in architecture are often both difficult and rewarding at the same time. In order to start a career in this field, individuals are usually required to attend architecture schools before becoming licensed.

What Are Architecture Schools?

Architecture schools are educational institutes in which students can learn about all aspects of architecture and architectural design. Although many people may not realize it, not all architects deign buildings. Architecture schools typically have something for everyone, no matter what area of architecture they wish to specialize in.

  • Commercial and residential architects are the typical types of architects that most people imagine when they hear this term. These professionals design and help construct both commercial and residential buildings.
  • Interior architects are similar to commercial and residential architects, in that they do design parts of some buildings. However, these types of architects typically concentrate on designing only the interior spaces of buildings.
  • Landscape architects are architects that specialize in designing and creating outdoor spaces, such as gardens, parks, and even backyards.
  • Industrial architects design a wide variety of different products that most of us use every day.

No matter which type of architectural career you’re planning to pursue, architecture schools will give you the knowledge to design and create with function, aesthetics, and safety in mind.

What Are the Different Types of Architecture Schools?

Independent architecture schools are some of the most common types of architecture schools. These types of schools allow students to focus all of their time and energy into learning about architecture. However, these schools aren’t available in all areas, so some individuals may need to find other types of architecture schools.

Technical or art and design institutes often have good architecture programs, as do traditional universities. Whichever architecture school you choose, though, be sure that it is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Only students who earn degrees from these schools will be able to take the architect licensing examination.

What Types of Degrees Do Architecture Schools Offer?

Architecture students will often have a few different options when it comes to choosing an architecture degree. Some may opt for architecture certificate or associate degree programs, for instance, which take anywhere from a few months to two years to complete. However, earning these types of architecture degrees will usually not fulfill the education requirements needed to become a licensed architect.

Bachelor degree programs in architecture are generally more common as well as more useful. Students can choose to earn a five year bachelor of architecture degree, or combine a four year bachelor of art or science degree in architecture with a master’s degree in architecture. Some students even choose to start with a bachelor’s degree in a field such as engineering or mathematics before earning a master’s degree in architecture.

What Courses Do Architecture Schools Offer?

In general, most architecture students are required to take a number of architecture courses, which may include the history of architecture, international architecture, architectural theory, and architectural design. Math courses, such as calculus and geometry, are also usually required, as are computer-aided drafting courses. Many architecture school students will also take several drawing and drafting courses as well.

What Should I Do After Graduating From an Architecture School?

After graduating with a bachelor of architecture degree or a master’s degree in architecture, most aspiring architects will be required to complete an internship. This internship usually involves the graduate working alongside experienced architects at established architectural firms for 700 hours. For most future architects, this internship usually takes about three years to complete.

After you’ve completed your internship, you can then take the Architect Registration Examination, which is given by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). This difficult test consists of nine different parts, and you will often have up to three years to complete and pass each part.

Only after you have graduated from an accredited architecture school, completed your internship, and passed the Architect Registration Examination can you legally call yourself an architect. For many, this entire process can take up to seven or eight years to complete.
